The stereotypes we share of old age can creep into our conversations and our relationships. This flyer from Leading Age may help to raise awareness. We deserve to be treated as individuals without being demeaned or dismissed because we have reached advanced age. Need I say that this applies to how we think of ourselves not just to how our caregivers and providers see us?

If you find yourself saying you had a “senior moment,” you reinforce the stereotype that old people are forgetful. If you joke about the “rumor mill,” you are demeaning your community and other older adults as superficial and irresponsible.

As a community, Pennswood has an astounding wealth and depth of knowledge and experience. Let no one dismiss us because we are aging.

Surgery, joint problems, and other challenges of aging are prompting many in our community to consider powered mobility devices. Regina Carlson recently shared what she learned and agreed to us publishing it here. Even if you aren’t considering such a device, you might want to be aware of what’s out there, and what support you can expect from providers.

Also, be aware that to get maximum benefit from any mobility aid, yes, even a humble cane or walking stick, check in with physical therapy. There are efficient ways to use these devices that can save you time, frustration, and perhaps pain. Some are counter-intuitive.

More than a good idea, the Greenhouse Project is one innovation in the continuum of care that is gaining traction. It offers supportive care for those in need of it in a setting that encourages friendships and closer relationships with care givers and residents. It’s a type of congregate care that is less institutional and more nurturing than alternatives. Both residents and staff see it as better overall than alternative. Read more by visiting the website.

Appreciative Inquiry

Eileen Conway, after hearing today’s discussion on healing the divisions at Pennswood, suggested that we all consider a process called “Appreciated Inquiry.” This process helps people find common ground by fostering appreciation and respect for common values. Eileen said, “At today’s meeting I [didn’t] get a chance to share a strategy that could support our community’s attempt to heal.

“It begins the healing process with an look our strengths and common shared beliefs.

“One model that speaks to this is called “Appreciative Inquiry. I’m thinking the concept could be included in a presentation at a Community meeting, Forum, Richmond’s doc or other.”

I looked it up, and here is a synopsis of the strategy.

Google Photos is one of the most popular photo sharing and cloud storage platforms. This hands-on workshop explores some of the basic features of the Google Photos app and will walk you through the steps of backing up your photos on your smartphone or mobile device to Google Photos. You’ll also learn how to create an album and share it.

In this hands-on workshop you will practice several ways to share photos with a smartphone. Learn how to share photos via text messages and email directly from your phone. The workshop will also go over how to share photos on social media apps like Facebook and Twitter.Prerequisites: To participate in this workshop, you must bring your own smartphone. Workshop materials will include step-by-step instructions for iPhones and Samsung phones.
